ask our dietitian your question todayearly morning workouts

question-answer-color-v-2 I get up at 4:15 a.m. and workout for 30 minutes (weight and cardio training). When and what should I eat? Before my workout or after? I don’t really have time to wait an hour before I workout. -Dawn B.

You should be fine eating after your workout, Dawn. It takes willpower and determination to wake before the sun comes up and workout! But you don’t need to pre-fuel, given the EARLY hour and short duration. At home you can blend up a breakfast smoothie with Greek yogurt, cracked flaxseed, berries and banana, or serve up some oatmeal, lean turkey sausage and grapefruit.  Or you can pack a granola-type bar in your bag or grab a protein shake from the juice bar to take with you. Other options are an egg white muffin breakfast sandwich from the drive-through or a quick spinach and feta breakfast wrap from a gourmet coffee shop.
