I have an almost exclusively breastfed 8 month-old, and still have ten pounds (gained 42) to go until I’m back at my pre-pregnancy weight. I just don’t know how to lose the rest of the weight because nursing makes me so hungry, and also I’ve heard cutting caloriess diminishes milk supply. Any advice? -Maureen
Congratulations on the baby and on losing the bulk of your pregnancy weight! It takes many new moms 12-24 months to achieve their conception weight. Remember that carrying the extra load has strengthened your muscles and now your milk supply adds just a little to the scale. And you’re sure to get stronger as your baby acts as progressive resistance – gaining weight as he or she grows.
Losing weight smartly means not sacrificing nutrition for yourself or baby. Be sure that while attempting to reduce calories, you’re taking a multivitamin and getting adequate protein, calcium and iron.
As you are hungry and need the calories, my suggestion would be to focus on physical activity while your baby is confined to a stroller, swing or bouncy chair. Once a baby can walk, keeping an eye on them is more challenging. Don’t forget that Kids Klub offers care so you can work out onsite with peace of mind!
