ask our dietitian your question todaywhat when and how to eat with LIVING HEALTHY

question-answer-color-v-2

I’m a recent LA Fitness “joinee,” looking for some dietary advice.

I’m currently working out in the morning (30-45 min elliptical, 30 min swimming), and in the evening (15-30 min elliptical, strength/core training). Weekends are inconsistent. Basically, I have no idea what I should be eating, when, or how much. I’ve read a ton on the web, but much of the info is conflicting. ANY advice at this point would be helpful. – Bonny O.

Welcome to the “club” and the LIVING HEALTHY community, Bonny!

You will want to adapt your eating to suit your new physical activity routine, and support your exercise with the fuel your body needs for great performance.

Focus on complex carbohydrates (natural, low sugar), vegetables, lean protein and dairy (trimmed, low-fat) complimented by fruit and plant fats for flavor and satiety.

Avoid fried food, candy, junk food, alcohol and soda.

Time your meals every 5-6 hours with a light snack [150 calories or less] between each meal. Read about eating after your morning workout by CLICKING HEREhttp://bloglafitness.azurewebsites.net/2013/04/05/eat-like-this-to-help-maximize-your-recovery-and-results/

You may not need to eat that much differently than you did before. Some people do great by scaling back their meals and adding in healthy snacks. Others keep their favorite items and eliminate all the other extra stuff. If your goal is weight loss, then reducing portions of what you’re currently eating will have a positive impact. – Debbie J., MS, RD
