What are the benefits of eating Greek yogurt? Is it healthier than regular yogurt? If it is recommended, what’s the recommended weekly allowance? Asra J.

Great question! Greek yogurt is known for its higher protein content. Unflavored (plain), it’s also lower in natural sugar. So the benefit is that it is a more balanced snack than conventional yogurt. Also, it may help you feel fuller longer. This can reduce excess eating, and thus assist in weight control.

Both types of yogurt are optimal sources of active cultures that are good for gastrointestinal health and immunity. They both also can be found in lower fat and non-fat varieties.

Unfortunately, Greek yogurt has less calcium since the whey is removed. Since there are so many protein sources yet relatively few calcium sources, for daily consumers this makes Greek yogurt a slightly less healthy option in my book.

Looking at sweetened versions, I’d still choose Greek yogurt with 15-20 grams sugar over a conventional yogurt with over 30 grams! I’d make a point to get another calcium source to avoid that extra sugar.

There is no defined allowance of yogurt versus other milk products. In general, follow the recommended daily intake for all milk products of 2-3 servings per day.  – Debbie J., MS, RD
