It’s best to fuel your brain and muscles ahead of time rather than play catch-up. So as long as your stomach’s not uncomfortable, I’d prefer your first choice of eating then working out. However, a big meal is not advisable too soon before intense physical activity. A sandwich and fruit are sufficient if you had a small snack, say at 3 PM.
You can always have something light such as a V-8, glass of milk or salad after your workout. Waiting to workout first, then eating late may mean you’d be out of time to fix something healthy or too famished to make good meal choices. – Debbie J., MS, RD
