I go to the gym every morning at 6:00 a.m. Every morning I make a banana, strawberry, cranberry juice smoothie with a scoop of whey protein and crushed ice. Also, after my work out I have a protein bar that usually has about 20-25 grams of protein. – Gary

I like your approach of having the smoothie BEFORE to help with your energy during your cardio, and a protein bar with a simple carbohydrate will work well after your weight training.  Just make sure your bar isn’t a 300 Calorie “meal replacement” with 10 or more grams of fat. - Debbie J., MS, RD

I like the idea of a pre-workout smoothie. I am actually allergic to whey (found this out with blood testing by allergy specialist). What can I put in my smoothie instead of a whey based protein? I’m trying to lose weight, so hoping it will be something beneficial without too many calories/fat grams.

    • There are lots of vegan protein powder that wouldn’t have any whey in it! I love vega protein powder and put it in all my smoothies, but if you just google “vegan protein powder” you’ll find tons of ideas

  2. How many calories and grams of sugar are in the smoothie

  4. I do 20 minutes cardio 5.5mph on the treadmill 6 to 7 times. Is this enough to lose fat or do I need to do more.

  5. That’s a good question and a good answer!

  7. I have been working out since the beginning of February. I am gaining weight instead of losing it. What am I doing wrong?

You may be doing everything right, as you may have increased lean tissue. Muscle weighs more than fat for the same volume. Go by how your clothing fits for success. For more accuracy, have your body composition checked by a ProResults trainer each month.

If your weight gain has been due to fat increase, it’s likely the result of increased consumption. Appetite rises to meet the demands of exercise and it is easy to eat more Calories than planned. Take a hard look at your diet to see where you can improve.
